About the Division:

The Information Technology Division (ITD) is a customer-oriented division which supports the Washington State Patrol in evaluating and recommending new software; designing, developing and supporting agency applications and Web sites; and providing support for project managers to manage information technology.

The Division's support staff also provides a 24-hour-per-day, 7-days-a-week operation, monitoring mission-critical programs and providing computer customer support for all of the Washington State Patrol.

Some of what to expect with this role:

We look forward to you using your security and operations knowledge to assist our Infrastructure and Operations team as we build and maintain the on-premises and cloud infrastructure and applications, increasing security awareness among system administrators and improving new system designs and existing system implementations though security design reviews and risk assessments.

Filling a senior role on the Security team you will use experience and knowledge to perform, advise, and/or lead information security efforts on aspects of the agency's IT Security Program including policies, procedures, awareness training, assessments, Cyber investigations, coordinating audits, and setting up and testing security controls.  Operationally, you will administrate relevant security tools such as the Security Information and Event Management and Kali tools..  Also provide guidance and assistance in refining capabilities of tools such as Security Information and Event Management, vulnerability scanning dashboards, and other monitoring tools.


This position is issued a cellular phone and email device and is expected to monitor it Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and periodically when off duty and respond to notices and/or calls within two hours. Occasional off-shift or weekend work may be necessary.


You may be required to travel as part of your work to access various work settings including data centers and remote communications sites. Travel includes typical rural and urban environments and may require 4 wheel drive utilization. You may travel on unimproved roads and this travel may result in overnight stays.

Required Qualifications:

* Master's Degree with focus on computer science, cybersecurity, information technology, software engineering, information systems, computer engineering AND a minimum of two (2) years of recent IT professional experience regardless of certifications,


Bachelor's degree in Computer science, cybersecurity, information technology, software engineering, information systems, computer engineering or related field and six (6) years of recent IT professional experience,


Associates degree in focus on Information Technology or Computer Security and eight (8) years of recent IT professional experience, and at least one professional IT security certification that is current such as those listed below,


Ten (10) years' recent experience as an IT professional and at least one professional IT security certification that is current such as those listed below,

Most recent IT professional work experience must include at least two (2) years of full time Journey-level work experience.

Acceptable professional IT certifications that are currently held and not lapsed can be substituted for up to three (3) years of experience with each certification equivalent to one year of experience.

Examples of acceptable certifications include:



* CompTIA (Security+ CE, CySA+, CASP+, PenTest+)

* SANS (GIAC advanced certifications)

* Microsoft Certified Developer (MSCD): App Builder

* Amazon Web Services Certified Developer-Associate Professional experience maintaining Windows servers

* Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or experience leading moderate to large complex technology projects.

Desired Qualifications:

* Two (2) years' experience effectively delivering complex and technical communication within a business context to executive management, managers, staff, and customers.
* Professional experience maintaining server environments including Linux (Red Hat), Windows, VMware servers.
* 3 years of managing technology teams
* Professional IT security certification(s) such as (ISC)2 (CISSP, CCSP, CISSP-ISSAP, CISSP-ISSEP, CISSP-ISSMP) ISACA (CISM, CSX-P)
* CompTIA (Security+ CE, CySA+, CASP+, PenTest+)

Demonstrated skill in the support and use of the following:

* Kali
* Linux operating systems
* Wireshark
* Powershell
* Usage of Security Incident and Event management software
* LAMP stack development
* .Net

Selection Process:

The candidate evaluation and selection process will include a preliminary screening of application materials for qualifications, clarity and completeness.  The applicants who meet or exceed the required qualifications and possess the most competitive background in directly related experience, knowledge, and training may be invited for interviews and testing by one or more panels.

Polygraph & Background Investigation:

Prior to hire, a polygraph examination and background investigation including criminal record history will be conducted.

Applicants are required to sign a release of information and will not have access to any investigative materials, files, or results.  The Washington State Patrol has strict standards relating, but not limited to, personal and employment characteristics, arrests, convictions, and illegal drug usage, etc.  During the polygraph examination, candidates are required to sign an assessment sheet and participate in an oral interview process to verify responses to the Personal History and Background Questionnaire and a Pre-Employment Interview.   Untruthful or misleading answers or omissions will be cause for rejection of potential employment.
